A wonderfully characterful antique late Victorian / Edwardian two-seater settee, dating to approximately c.1890–1910, upholstered in beautifully rich deep crimson red velvet.

Elegant, dramatic and full of period character, this beautiful antique sofa combines a graceful exposed timber frame with sumptuous upholstery and wonderfully decorative detailing.

The gently curved upholstered back features subtle button detailing and flows beautifully into the shaped arms. Exposed timber supports are finished with attractive carved rosette details, while traditional studwork runs around the upholstery and lower frame. Elegant tapered legs complete the design, with castors adding another lovely period feature.

Two generous loose velvet seat cushions give the settee a relaxed and inviting appearance, while the combination of deep crimson upholstery and naturally aged timber creates an unmistakable English country-house aesthetic.

Its relatively compact proportions make this a particularly versatile antique sofa — substantial enough to make an impact while remaining suitable for smaller living rooms, bedrooms, libraries, dressing rooms or fireside settings.

Condition

Presented in good antique condition with age-related marks, knocks, scratches, surface wear and variations to the exposed timber finish, consistent with a piece dating from around the turn of the 20th century.

There is visible wear and loss to areas of the timber finish, particularly around the exposed frame and lower front rail.

The red velvet upholstery also displays signs of previous use, including variations to the pile, light marks and general age-related wear. The upholstery is believed to be a later replacement rather than original to the settee.

These characteristics contribute to its wonderfully relaxed and established country-house appearance.
